Generally speaking, a virgin is a person that has not engaged in sexual activities yet. Women virginity questions often are of great significance in many cultures. In some traditions it is expected for a woman or a girl to be a virgin before she marries, and on the day of the wedding she wears a white dress or gown, indicating her “innocence”. Virginity is been revered as one of the greatest assets of an unmarried female. Sometimes the right to have sex with a virgin is a subject of trade and can be bought. Up until the Middle Ages there used to exist “droit du seigneur” – “the lord’s right” by which the lord of a land is entitled to the virginity of a newlywed woman on the night of her wedding. This is still practiced in some countries today.

In some cultures women virginity questions are deeply embedded in the tradition that women even avoid any kind of physical contact before marriage. Some unmarried women who are believed not to be virgins, whether by choice or force, may be considered sinners and wicked and are often subjected to social rejection, torture or even death punishment.

But what are the signs of virginity and how to recognize them? And how to recognize virginity? To answer these women virginity questions first you need to know something about female anatomy. Traditionally, inspecting a woman’s hymen may be considered a reliable test for virginity. It is often achieved with the “two-finger test”. A doctor or another respectable person of the community inserts a finger into the woman’s vagina to establish the presence of hymen. The hymen is a thin tissue in the form of membrane that partially covers the external opening of the vagina. In the event of sexual intercourse, the hymen may break and bleeding may occur. But this is not always the case. The hymen is flexible tissue and its opening increases with age so it’s possible for a woman not to bleed on her first sexual experience. It is very important to know that sexual intercourse is not the only way of breaking a hymen. Women who are physically active and have been practicing sports since young age may have broken their hymen during an exercise without even knowing it. It is also possible for a hymen to be broken by riding a bicycle. So examining the hymen of a woman or a girl in order to confirm signs of virginity is not completely reliable method.

Many women who have previously had sexual intercourse or their hymen had been damaged in any other way choose to get a cosmetic surgery called hymenoplasty or hymenorrhaphy. Whit this procedure their hymen is restored and assures bleeding on their next intercourse, thus practically restating the woman’s virginity.
