ODM’s gets major blow as KHANGATI pulls out of race because he does NOT HAVE MONEY
The Bungoma
County Governors’ race took a different twist after one of the strong
contenders on an ODM ticket Internal Security Assistant Minister Alfred
Khangati pulled out of the
race due to financial constrains.
Khangati,
who is also the former MP for Kanduyi cited lack of funds as the reason for his
withdrawal. He claims that he has tried so hard to source for money to sustain
his campaign but to no avail. His effort to request his party ODM to support
him with funds also bore no fruits.
The Minister
discovered that mounting a campaign to cover the entire County will be an
expensive affair, since one needs nearly Ksh 30 million to cover nine
constituencies in Bungoma. He recounted that in the last three weeks he has seen
an aspirant spend close to Ksh 5million, a
move he said was untenable. The little money he has is only enough to sustain
his family, and with the remaining 26 days to elections no help is forthcoming,
he said.
The Minister
has already communicated to his party leader Raila Odinga about his decision to
bolt out of the race, he has also written to the Bungoma County IEBC returning
officer Madahana Mbaya about the same.
The
other contestants are former livestock PS Ken Lusaka of New Ford Kenya,
Ambassador Jack Tumwa, Barasa
and Jounalist Wabwoba Walinywa who were cleared last Friday by the IEBC to run.
With
Khangati’s absence, sources indicate that Ken Lusaka of Amani Coalition has a
cut above the rest and stands a better chance to clinch the seat although that
remains to be seen. He thanked his supporters and urged them to continue
supporting CORD.
