SHOCKING REVELATIONS: CHRONICLES OF A KENYAN GAY SEX WORKER

SHOCKING REVELATIONS: CHRONICLES OF A KENYAN GAY SEX WORKER

John has been a male sex worker for close to 20 years now, and has been HIV positive for 12 years. His clients range from married men out for fun, single gay and straight men, policemen, priests and even popular televangelists. Business, John says, has never been better since he disclosed his HIV status.

He says: “Our clients prefer having sex with HIV positive male sex workers and use condoms because they are open about their status and have nothing to hide, as opposed to those who are HIV positive but hide their status.”

Mathenge is in an open relationship with his boyfriend, who unfortunately, is not openly gay. Mathenge is looking forward to getting married and settling down soon, after which he hopes he will stop sex work.

Mathenge meets his clients just about anywhere; local clubs and pubs, some he hosts in his house, and others in their cars in parking lots and basement parking.

Asked about his rates, Mathenge is clearly the ‘high-maintenance’ type as his rates are way higher than other male sex workers interviewed for this piece.

“I charge nothing less than Sh10,000 per shot — it doesn’t matter how we do it. For a night? (laughs) you cannot afford me for an entire night. Frankly…I don’t even have the time for that, “ he says.

Some of his clients, he reveals, demand that he role-plays; that he acts like a lady, complete with make-up and other accessories.

“You are told to wear the ninja (niqab) and go to their homes when their wives are away on business. Others want me to wear make-up, dance for them, wear a stuffed brassier and lingerie and even catwalk seductively down the staircase like a woman,” says Mathenge.

On the day of this interview — Valentine’s Day — Mathenge was optimistic that he would find a date for the night.

I don’t mind going for a drink with a stranger and not charge for sex for tonight. The lucky guy will get this gifts — chocolate and expensive perfume I bought for Sh7,000. I know Kenyans will find this hard to believe, but I give back to society. I help the homeless and feed the hungry using my own money,” says Mathenge.

An avid advocate for safe sex, he dedicates his time to empowering fellow male sex with information regarding condom use.

He says: “I always carry condoms in my bag. This is a message I want to pass to all male sex workers; always use condoms to avoid re-infection and spread of HIV.”

But it is Majesty Mantully’s (nickname) who exposes how dangerous the male sex worker’s world can be. His services come in packages, with the full package including a massage, and extras (romance, kissing, fellatio and sex) costing Sh3,500.SHOCKING REVELATIONS: CHRONICLES OF A KENYAN GAY SEX WORKER
